Antique Thingy...

Sometimes the objects I desire
make no real sense...

As I learned on a recent trip
to an antique store...

(click photos to enlarge)

Oh it is a beauty...
with it's classical details
covered in chippy paint...

But...
What is it??

I found I wasn't the only one
who had no idea
the purpose
of this lovely cast metal pretty:-)

The tag simply stated antique thingy...

It is heavy...
and both ends have simple post screws...

Do you have any guesses??
I would love to hear them!

For me...
It really didn't matter,
I was struck by it..

In my mind...
it is my magical scepter....

For those days when I feel
like being Queen :-))

Today I am joining..

(how appropriate!)
and

Thanks for playing long today...

LOL, I vote for magical scepter, that's awesome! The screw ends make me think of a curtain rod or something but based on the design, I hardly think it was that. I have no clue! Happy VTT!

I have no idea what it is, but it makes me think of drapery.

It's lovely; I once had an ornate doorbell button cover that was shaped like that, but I don't see a hole in yours...

Dearest Bella,

That thingy really puzzles me... Why can it be screwed on/off? What is the purpose of that; would it hold something in-between? That would be something one had to ask an expert. What is the material made of, other than it being heavy. Is it bronze? The screws suggest it had to be used with something of wood or even metal... Who knows?!

I have no idea, but it is lovely just the way it is, I am gonna check back and see if anyone knows what it was used for.....great Thingie today!!! Have a great VTT!

Could it be used to dial the old fashioned heavy magnetic phones? They used to make dialers for ladies with delicate fingers and long nails.
It is machine turned, not hand made- the screw part- so it would have been made about the time people got the dial up phones in their homes.
Let me research this and I will see what I can find.

I don't know what it is either! I love it though and I'm glad you bought it!! Something makes me think it has something to do with drapery also.

It's certainly a conversation piece. Pretty. Best to you--JQ

Maybe it is an antique paperweight? I would have bought it too. There is something very magical about it!

Hi Bella,
I love your antique thingy!!! LOL! It's so pretty....although I have no idea what it is!
Ornamentation for a door? A window? Hmmm.
The door hinges in our house have decorative little post screw ends sort of like that; but that piece looks way too long to be part of a hinge. It's a mystery!

Can't believe that no one is able to identify your neat antique thingy Bella.
Maybe you can visit some other antique dealers in the area and then let us all know when you find out what it is.

I think it is old drapery hardware. But it is magical drapery hardware when it is up above a window the window becomes a magical portal.
I'm just saying..

Could it be a vintage cake plate divider? One end screwing into a bottom plate then the other end into the bottom of a second plate making a 2 tiered server. When not in use it could be stored away more simply by taking apart and covering the ends with the cute finials.

NO idea, but it sure is cool and looks awfully pretty sitting just the way it is!

Oh wow, you know what's funny? I have a hall tree that it's embellishments look a lot like your piece. Check it out in this link and let me know if you agree. Take a look at the rod holding up the wood top. How strange!

Could it be a finial from an iron bed? I think the above comment about it maybe was a finial on a curtain rod sounds like a good guess too. Enjoy!

It's the magical septure (sp) of creativity! When you're feeling low on ideas, just bonk yourself on the head with it and wa-la, you're cured of the void! Maybe it was part of a thingy that had a thingy attached to it! Solved! You just should have called me! Love it whatever it is!,xoxo-cindy

Bella, I'm as mystified as everyone else, but wonder if it is a holder of some sort for either a plate or a fan. I don't think it's window hardware, but anything is possible. I hope you find out!

I have an iron bed that is missing some sort of decoration on the head board and also the foot board. The areas where the piece is missing has threaded posts where something would have been screwed onto the top. Just a guess,I have been trying to find pictures of iron beds with the pieces on them! Good luck searching!
