My American Rose Society - guest post

I am excited to share
that I have had an article published
in The American Rose Society Newsletter...

Garden Tour - Cottage Garden

At the turn of this century I bought a home that was built at the turn of the previous century. A run down storybook Victorian Cottage, that would eventually become my "Rose Cottage".

Not only did I fall in love with my home, I fell in love with the half acre of lawn that with a lot of work would become my garden and planting lots of rosebushes was an obvious choice.

I am a “hands on” person. There have been many trials and errors along the way but failure is growth if you can take it in stride and learn from your mistakes. I love companion plantings and feel it is important to attract the right balance of beneficial insects to the garden, and on the same note I keep an organic garden.

I feel good about the fact that all creatures great and small can stop by for a safe sip or nibble in the garden.

My cottage-style garden was built before I was clear what the meaning of that even was. I have planted more than 100 rosebushes mostly of the english variety by David Austin. They mingle and dance among dozens of different perennials and annuals creating a whimsical world. It just wouldn't be my style to have a formal rose garden with tidy borders. I am newly excited each year to see what will flourish, be it an abundance of foxgloves or endless varieties of columbine.

For me gardening is all about enjoying the journey and allowing myself to be enchanted by it's gift of perfect imperfection.
