In Victorian times..
each flowers was assigned a meaning.
A romantic way to wordlessly express yourself
through flowers.

The White Lily
of course stands for purity...
an alternate meaning was...
It's heavenly to be with you.
Isn't that endearing?
My little cottage smells heavenly today :-)
Nothing fills the room with heady fragrance,
the way a Lily does!

Beautiful! I can almost smell them! We get lots of lilies delivered to the hospital and we are not allowed to take them into some wards because of the strong smell. I love the way they can scent up a whole yard. Sweet white with just a blush of pink...lovely!
Bella,
How beautiful your lily is! I love the Victorian meaning to flowers. That is so true and so interesting!

Dearest Bella,
This is so Victorian! From the book of Sheila Pickles; The Complete Language of Flowers I'd love to add this poem:
LILY
Purity
And the stately lilies stand
Fair in silvery light
Like saintly vestals, pale in prayer;
Their pure breath sanctifies the air,
As its fragrance fills the night.

Hi Bella,
I enjoy having lillies in the house as well. Especially the white ones. They look beautiful and stylish on my black marble mantelpiece. The scent is lovely indeed, especially in the evening!

Hello Bella
Between Blogger being slow and our internet server being down, it's been tough to visit
anyone.
I like how you displayed the white lilies and can inhale their sweet fragrance from here. :-)

Just love lilies. I have some nearly ready to bloom. I also love the Victorian meaning behind the flowers. I wish we applied those things more today!
God Bless<

What lovely pictures of a beautiful flower! I wish I was a gardener, as I would love to have oodles of pretties adorning my yard. Visiting from Cielo's party.

I use those Victorian meanings when I'm planning a memorial garden for a beloved pet or lost loved one. Helps me to decide what I want to plant, and gives multiple meanings to the project.
