I had planned to plant my new Roses today...
but it's not so nice out there :-)
(click photos to enlarge)
So instead I planted this little planter
for the side of my front porch...
I don't make a lot of planters
in the back garden,
but like to do a few on the front porch...
I love to do this basket style...
and am hoping to get a bunch planted this year
for the back patio...
They are super easy and inexpensive,
I just line a basket with a heavy plastic trash bag.
I hot glue the top in place to keep it water tight.
They last for years...
I filled the basket with
Fairy Primroses..
They are one of my favorite spring flowers for planters...
last year we had a long cold spring and they lasted for months
this year our forecast calls for a similar spring...
white Pansy with deep purple veins...
bits of Alyssum tucked in for their sweet smell...
Since I was on the front porch
I couldn't resist sharing a photo of my Camilla....
I told you yesterday
I lost a few roses to the cold winter...
It's always sad to lose a plant,
but it's always fun to try something new too :-)
One of the joys of cottage style gardening
is the garden is always evolving..
One year there is an abundance of one flower
another year a different flower thrives,
and there are always the volunteer plants
produced by wind and squirrels...
each year is fresh and full of it's own surprises...
I don't always buy the most expensive roses
or really care about name brands...
some of my favorites are just bagged roses
from the grocery store,
bought much cheaper than a bundle of cut flowers...
But, last year with our cold wet spring
the David Austin Roses excelled,
and had no problems over the winter...
not to mention I bought a Mary Rose
last summer
and have fallen head over heels in love with her..
so I picked up these four to add to my collection
this year...
My heart is pitter pattering in anticipation:-)
I am joining,
and
Thanks for visiting me today...

Oh Bella, The roses you picked out are very pretty. I luv the cabbage form and the many petals they have. Hope they bloom quickly..............Julian
Your flowers are gorgeous! I love the white basket idea. The white pansy is picture perfect.
I love your planterbasket with the purplish primroses and white pansies in it! Also absolutely adore the roses you picked to be planted soon hopefully!
Bye,
Marian
The planter basket is beautiful with all your white wicker. I would love to venture into the Austin roses but alas the deer would eat them too.
your basket is beautful, I just planted three more roses, of course secretly, my husband wouldn't be happy...hahaha, the good thing about having so many he'll never know!!! I need to get some of those you have shown...gorgeous!!!
Bella ~ your basket of pansies is just delightful. I love the roses too. ;-)
I am sure your garden will be outstanding! Those David Austen Tea Roses are wonderful!
I don't know a lot about Roses but I had the David Austen Heritage rose (white) and it was just breathtaking...and I had a Mary Rose that did not winter in WI. You have a much milder climate there- I guess I was surprised to hear that you lost roses to the winter at all.
What a great idea-lining the baskets with an old garbage bag and then gluing it in place. I never glued my own and the crazy things always let go and slid down in...okay..you are smarter than I am and we're both blonds...go figure!;>) xxoo Diana
I can't wait to plant! I am going to steal your white basket idea. Love your mix of fleurs in the basket! Happy WW

How gorgeous! And beautiful in this big basket! Happy Spring! ♥
Love your basket of sweet pansies and I can see why you are full of anticipation for those roses!
Hi Bella, You are right below me at Wow Us Wednesday. I am a fan of white wicker too! I haven't planted anything yet but I saw the pansies at the nursery the last time I was there. Hopefully soon...come visit my blog if you have time. Your blog is lovely. ~Ann
The white and purple are beauteous together!
Bella, that basket planter of primroses is so beautiful! I love David Austin roses!
Hi Bella
Your basket of spring flowers looks very pretty on the porch.
Some nice selections of David Austin to add to your rose collection, hope all are as fragrant as Mary Rose.
Hugs,
Judith
Oh Bella, that basket of flowers sure makes the place look all cozy and friendly. Think I'll take back the white basket I was giving to a church rummage, repaint it and plant some flowers in it. Thanks for the idea! Until next week, take care.

Yup! There's your Allyssum! I love things in planters but it's pretty labor intensive here. Everything MUST be watered every morning or forget about it! Your baskets are sweet. The roses look wonderful! I hope they do well.
Oh my! I just love your basket idea...thank you so much for sharing! What a wonderful way to make your porch charming and inviting! Your roses are going to be amazing! I look forward to the beautiful photos I know you'll be sharing with us this summer!
Best Wishes and Blessings,
Amanda
Bella what a beautiful sweet Planter Basket. Here we have the opposite problem, it is not the cold that kills off our plants, but the extreme heat. After over a decade at our present location and many Gardening 'failures and losses' I have decided to allow my Garden to evolve almost naturally, because those plants and flowers that "planted themselves" without any help from a Gardener, seem to thrive best. It was a bit difficult for me since I couldn't "control" where each plant decided to locate and thrive or even which species, but it has taken the frustration out of it for me, and the expense, because now the plants do all the work and seem to know best where they want to be and will do well! *winks*

Your flowers are gorgeous! I love the basket idea.
Dear Bella,
Thank you for your sweet comment on my blog. It really helps! It must have been very hard for you getting those appartments next to your beautiful house.
I so enjoy the gardening season having started. All those beautiful gardens and flowers on the blogs. Your baskets with spring flowers look very pretty! Oh I wish I had a veranda like yours. It looks so romantic!
You chose some lovely roses. I have several roses by David Austen in my garden as well, but not the varieties you bought. I am looking forward to see your roses in bloom in summer.
Happy wednesday!
Lieve groet, Madelief x

I like your white pansy very much!
Your new roses will be spectacular!

Just beautiful! As soon as the snow melts and the weather gets warmer which will most likely be in May here, I want to do a cottage garden in my tiny back yard. I am so excited about it!!

Hi Bella!
Beautiful basket! I never thought of trying that...thanks for the great idea!
I love all the new roses you picked out; so lovely!
I wish I could plant some new things this year, but I've run out of room in the gardens I have!

Bella,
I can't get over how springy everything looks! Love the basket planter, and your choice of Austins. I can't grow them unless I want to treat them like annuals. I'm late ordering this year. Mme. Hardy and Maiden's Blush, which me luck at availability.

I like Primroses, as you say they last such a long time also they will flower year after year if looked after. I like the white David Austin rose.
The pansies look wonderful I may have to do the same for some colour.
I have to say loving the look of the new roses, how have you bought them (what size?) and will they take a year or two to flower?
I don't know much about roses but your continued photos is making me think seriously. I have a beautiful front garden but it only gets full sun in the morning, is this a good place for roses?
Love Dawn xx
Hi Bella,
Oh, I am just loving these roses! I can't wait for mine to bloom. I might have to get one of these now.
Debbie
That planter is so pretty! The white pansy is so lovely!
I loved your planter and that's a great idea about the plastic bag. I have roses too but they tend to fend for themselves. I hope to learn more about them this year.
Bella, your basket is gorgeous. We've got a while ahead of us before we can plant anything, but I am getting very inspired by your post.
Happy WW,
Judy
